  • Adoption in India runs under the Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act, 2015, as amended in 2021, and the Adoption Regulations, 2022 made under it; the Central Adoption Resource Authority, a statutory body under the Ministry of Women and Child Development, is the nodal agency for in country and inter country adoption.
  • On 20 August 2026 the Authority issued a public notice inviting suggestions on amendments to the Regulations, to strengthen the framework and settle legal and procedural difficulties, with 5 September as the last date.
  • The Authority recorded 5,022 adoptions in 2025-26, 4,603 in country and 419 inter country, up from 4,515 the year before.
  • Child rights groups have asked for faster decisions where a child cannot return to the birth family, simpler paperwork, stronger oversight of children's homes against illegal adoption and trafficking, and convergence between the Juvenile Justice route and adoption under the Hindu Adoptions and Maintenance Act, 1956.

Exam lens: the Central Adoption Resource Authority under the Juvenile Justice Act, 2015; the 2021 amendment moved adoption orders from courts to District Magistrates; India is a party to the Hague Convention on Inter Country Adoption (1993).
